As well as a strong contingent of 1020 cars, the Bournemouth Bash on 07 August was supported by groups from neighbouring MGOC clubs including Winchester, Chichester, Runnymede and Blackmoor Vale who all had their own dedicated display areas arranged by their respective area secretaries. Also in attendance were representatives from Solent, Southampton and New Forest, Durnovaria, Sarum and West Sussex.
In near perfect weather conditions the glittering array of highly polished chrome and gleaming paintwork in the show area demonstrated more than half a century of MG production from the immediate post-war T and Y series through the Magnette years and the inevitable plethora of MGBs and GTs.
More recent models included several RV8s, representatives from the Z series and a rare SV – one of only two right hand drive supercharged variants manufactured.
Traders taking part included Phoenix Classic Cars who specialise in classic and modern MG servicing , repairs and restoration and Healey Valeting where owner Wayne Healy was on hand to offer tips on how to bring your MG up to showroom condition
Away from the dedicated MG display area participants were able to enjoy the attractions of the museum in company with the founder Sammy Miller MBE, the 11 times British trials champion and the winner of over 1,400 events.
He was more than happy to pose for photographs with visitors, explain the history of many of the stunning exhibits (which includes the Norton Collection) and show those technically minded around his workshop where he spends almost every day restoring and maintaining his vast line-up of machinery.
Over several floors the museum is home to over 450 rare and classic motorcycles spanning seven decades of motoring displayed in eight galleries making it one of the finest collections of fully restored and working motorcycles in the world.
Even those who thought that they had no interest in two wheels discovered plenty to see during their day as the venue also houses a vast array of motoring and motorsport memorabilia. As well as the cars and motorcycles there were craft shops to browse, a small animals sanctuary featuring alpacas, donkeys, and goats, while breakfast butties, lunches and cream teas were served in the Bashley Manor Tea Rooms.
Sammy was on hand to make the prize winning draw for a Summer Hamper (created by club member Wendy Brooks) which was won by former 1020 Area Secretary Graham Lowe and presented by club vice-chairman Pip Bonner.
Other fund-raising activities include a grand tombola, plant stall and sales of books and jigsaws. Net proceeds from the day totalled just over £1,500 which will be divided between the club’s two nominated charities: Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and Macmillan Caring Locally both of which had their own stands in the museum courtyard.
Thanks to everyone who came along, to all the hard-working club marshals and especially to the staff and volunteers at the museum who were so friendly and welcoming.
Chris Adamson, 1020 Area Secretary
