MG Racing at Thruxton

The first official 1020 club event of 2021 saw 11 members visit Thruxton circuit in Hampshire for the latest rounds of MGOC racing championships.

The MGs were supporting the British Truck Racing series and the programme also included races for classic Minis, Caterhams, Hyundai Coupes and a mix of saloons and sportscars (including a couple of MGs ) in the Welsh Championship.

With grandstand seats secured, spectators were able to watch the action unfold at the club chicane, always the site of some of the closest action and furious overtaking – especially on the last lap.

The Lancaster Insurance MG Owners Club competition saw a variety of MG models varying from ZR’s and MGFs to MGB Roadsters, GTs and even a pair of MG Maestro’s contesting five different classes in each race.

For the early arrivals there was the opportunity to see the MGs in morning practice, in qualifying and finally in two races the last one of the day staged in rain which saw some anxious moments for the drivers and one serious off into the barriers in front of the grandstand for an MGB.

The only disappointment on the day was a decision by the national motorsport body to ban the public from the paddock which meant that spectators couldn’t get close to the cars and had to watch from the grass banks or grandstands only.
