40th Anniversary of the MGOC

The long awaited celebratory weekend of 13th & 14th July was a huge success. 10 MGs and a camper van from our club made their way to Swavesey in brilliant sunshine. Quite a few of us took advantage of the organised open top bus tour of Cambridge on Saturday afternoon. All 22 of us met for dinner at The Golden Ball that evening. Until a few years ago this lovely pub / hotel was owned by Roche Bentley, the founder of the MGOC. Sunday morning was happily a little cooler until lunch time. There was a staggered arrival at our roomy club stand on the showground, adjacent to the headquarters complex. There was enough space for Nigel Knowles to throw the well-travelled club boomerang. The changes at the H.Q. are enormous and the buildings are now extended to take up the whole of the site. In the arena we had displays of cars, steam engines, raptor flying and majorettes. There were many trade stalls and MGOC spares outlets doing brisk business. Roche said a few words towards the end of the afternoon, thanking the members for making the club what it is today. However, we must remember that he started it all off, from very humble beginnings 40 years ago. A few of our group stayed over on Sunday evening and dined again at The Golden Ball where Roche and our regional secretary Nigel Knowles joined us for a jovial evening to round off the weekend.
