Terry Mobley with a model of Wellington “R for Robert”
Terry Mobley provided club members with a very interesting and emotive presentation covering some of the wartime flying experiences of his father, Wing Commander Arthur Mobley. The talk included some old video footage of the building and flying of theWellington bomber together with a slide show of photographs that Terry has collected over many years.
There were many anecdotes of RAF life together with pictures of the MG SA which was owned by Terry’s father and pictures of the range of MGs owned by Terry himself. Arthur Mobley flew out of RAF Feltwell, a wartime airbase, which is now used by the American Air Force. His aircraft, R for Robert is now located in the Brooklands Air Museum and has been partially restored after being recovered from Loch Ness having ditched there in December 1940. In 1976 the Wellington was located by a team of American Loch Ness Monster hunters and was successfully salvaged on 21st September 1985. Despite nearly forty-five years underwater, the aeroplane was remarkably well preserved.
Terry brought along to the meeting many items of memorabilia of his father including the silk escape map, flying helmet and boots and some copies of his father’s flight
